I completed a degree in the Bachelor of Business Administration program, with finance major. During my undergraduate education, I had the opportunity to work for TransCanada Corporation as an analyst. I learned the importance of Economics at my internship, as it was a very crucial aspect of being an analyst in the power industry. I noticed that I was lacking the necessary skills to reach my full potential in this position, as I have not taken enough classes in Economics. I also had the CEO, Hal Kvisle, tell me that you cannot go wrong with taking more statistics in university. This series of events led me to believe that Economics does add value to ones career. Therefore I decided to do more of it so I can be successful as a future job market participant.
When I returned back to the Acadia University for my last year, I decided to take Econometrics. At first I was a bit nervous because the actual name of the course is a bit daunting, but I stuck with my choice anyways because I wanted to learn the quantitative techniques to measure relationships between variables so I can make informed decisions in the future. I realized that this is a lacking skill in the industry and I wanted to give my future employers a good reason to hire me. I found the course to be meaningful not just from a quantitative point of view but also a logical point of view and I am glad that I took it.
In the end, I wished I had taken more Economics courses during my undergraduate education. I find that Economics is an amazing field of study as it gives you valuable skills you can take to the industry or any part of your life. I found that the Economics classes taught me a different way of thinking. It taught me not to just accept things for how they are but challenge questions and ask why. I believe that the valuable lessons from my Economics classes will have a positive impact not only on my career, but on my life as well!
