I chose to pursue economics at Acadia because I wanted to better understand the world around me. I wanted to explore policies such as minimum wage, unions, and international trade. Things that come up all the time in the news and that are often discussed. However my opinions were based mainly on feelings and I knew I needed to know more in order to have a sound argument.

Not only did we discuss those topics and more, the economics program at Acadia provided me with just the right balance of practical knowledge, variety, and engaging subject matter. It was a unique combination of philosophy, current events, applied mathematics, and business. Courses covered everything from the stock market to inequality in the workplace, from economic solutions to environmental problems to international trade.  I feel I have received an education that was not only mentally stimulating but also applicable to the real world.

Even though economics can be seen as dry, the personalities that make up the department ensure that it is not so. You really get the sense that they work hard to keep the relatively small department as dynamic as possible. As varied as the profs are, a common thread seems to be how the professors focused on content rather than on mundane details like a particular style of formatting or how neat your handwriting is (within reason). Heather the secretary is great.  I highly recommend this program if you are interested in a practical understanding of the society we have created for ourselves and would still like a job at the end of it.
