Coming back to university after working for 5 years was a difficult but rewarding decision. I was concerned from my previous experiences with post secondary education programs that I would be considered a number and would receive relatively little interaction with my professors. Acadia University completely changed my perspective on what a post secondary experience can be. The small class sizes allowed the professors to engage with students directly and develop relationships that helped them grow our progress.

When I first came back to school, I had decided to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. I had experience in the business world and though it would be a natural fit. However, after two economics courses I quickly understood where my passions lie. I decided to switch to a double major in Economics and Business Administration. Economics at Acadia provided me with an ability to quantify how shifts in the economic environment can affect individual firms or households. It provided meaning to business and political decisions.

The professors of the Economics Department are some of the most caring and engaging mentors I have ever had the pleasure of working with. They genuinely care about the material and are willing to provide extra help to any student who shows the same level of passion. The encouragement that I received from the professors pushed me to achieve an Honours degree, which was something I hadn’t even considered prior to coming back to school. I also had multiple opportunities to engage with the department outside the classroom. I had the opportunity to work as a teaching assistant, a research assistant and act as President of the Acadia Economics Society during my final year.

In the end, the learning and experience I received at Acadia University was life changing. I felt prepared enough to pursue a Masters Degree directly after my Acadia experience, but will always remember fondly my time at Acadia.
